Why Dogs Bark in Their Sleep

Barking or making noises during sleep is often a sign your dog is actively dreaming about something. Totally normal!

Dreaming

Like humans, dogs can have bad dreams or nightmares that disturb their sleep and cause them to vocalize their distress

Nightmares

Dogs may perceive sounds or smells during the night that spark barking even while asleep.

Senses

Conditions like dementia or cognitive dysfunction can lead to episodes of barking or disorientation at night.

Health

Anxious dogs may bark or whimper in their sleep due to stress or fear. Thunderstorms can worsen this.

Anxiety

Avoid startling or waking a healthy dog who barks during sleep. They are likely just dreaming.

Let Them Sleep

Consult your vet if frequent disturbed sleep, pacing, or house soiling accompany the barking.
