What Causes Diabetes in Dogs?

Some breeds like terriers, poodles and keeshonds are genetically prone to diabetes, suggesting an inherited link.

Genetics

Inflammation of the pancreas hampers insulin production, increasing diabetes likelihood later on.

Pancreatitis

Excess weight stresses the pancreas. Obese pets have higher diabetic risk. Slim down overweight dogs.

Obesity

Steroids like prednisone and cortisone can induce elevated blood sugar levels.

Dog Steroid Use

Hormone changes during pregnancy and heat cycles can trigger transient diabetes requiring insulin treatment.

Pregnancy

Sometimes the immune system mistakenly attacks insulin producing cells, severely lowering or halting production.

Autoimmune Reaction

Increased thirst/urination, weight loss, lethargy, vision changes signal possibility of diabetes requiring bloodwork.
