Do Dogs Have Tonsils

Like humans, dogs have tonsils located in the throat to help filter germs and prevent infection from entering the gut.

Purpose

Tonsils contain tissue and lymph glands to capture and destroy invading bacteria and viruses.

Glands

A dog's tonsils are found in the back of the mouth towards the start of the throat beside the tongue.

Position

Tonsillitis and enlarged tonsils from infection are common ailments just like in people.

Issues

Bad breath, difficulty swallowing, tender throat and swollen/red tonsils indicate tonsil problems.

Symptoms

Vets examine the throat and may use x-rays to diagnose tonsil infections.

Diagnosis

Antibiotics, pain relief medication. Severe cases may require tonsil surgery if recurrent.
