Garfield is depicted as an orange tabby domestic shorthair cat in the comics. No official "Garfield" breed exists.  

June 19th is celebrated as Garfield's birthday in the comic strip and the date his first strip debuted.

Garfield was created by cartoonist Jim Davis. The comic debuted in 1978 and still runs today.

Davis based parts of Garfield on his childhood tabby cat and another tabby he observed in Indiana.  

Several movies have been made starring the Garfield character and computer animation.
